Heating & Cooling Options for Older Homes

Older homes have a lot of character. They just don’t make them like they used to—especially since they were built during a time where HVAC systems were either non-existent or not common. The good news is there are options for heating your older home in the winter and keeping it cool in the summer.

Heating Options

Throw out your noisy space heater and warm up with a permanent, cost-effective solution. One of the first steps to upgrading the heating in your older home is to start with what you have. Get a professional to take a look at your current system. If your home has radiator heating, there may be usable components or areas to be upgraded or retrofitted.

Also, consider upgrading to an energy efficient heat pump. Heat pumps also work in conjunction with air conditioning systems so you can be comfortable in the summer.

Cooling Options

Tired of window air conditioners that just don’t cut it? There are ways to cool your beautiful older home that don’t involve a clunky, loud, and unsightly window unit. Upgrading to a central air conditioning system ensures cool, even air throughout your house. Central A/C can also be joined with a natural gas furnace or heating coil which cuts down the need for additional systems.

If central heating and cooling wasn’t present in your home at the time it was built, ductwork might not be possible due to limited space. However, ductless mini-split HVAC systems are small, unobtrusive units that can be added to just about any room in your house. What’s more, most of these systems work for both cooling and heating.
